Michel van der Klei – Ultra Runner & Race Director

Michel van der Klei is a Dutch-born ultramarathon runner who has made a significant impact on the Irish ultrarunning scene since moving to Ireland in 2014. With a background in martial arts, Michel began his running journey in 2012 and has since become a respected athlete and race organizer.

Spartathlon (Greece)

  • Distance: 246 km from Athens to Sparta.
  • 2023: Injured and didn't make cut-off at CP59 190.5KM (Bib #50).
  • 2025: Participated again (Bib #79), successfully finishing the course.
  • Notable: One of the toughest ultramarathons in the world, featuring a 1,200-meter climb over Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.

Connemara 100 (Ireland)

  • Distance: 100 miles through the scenic Connemara region.
  • 2019, 2020 and 2021: Best finish 18:26 in 2019

Wild Atlantic Ultra – Founder & Race Director

Michel is the visionary behind the Wild Atlantic Ultra, Ireland’s only 50-mile ultramarathon, which loops around the iconic Croagh Patrick in County Mayo.

  • Inaugural Run: 2019, with just 9 participants.
  • 2024 Edition: Attracted 50 runners.
  • 2026 Goal: Expand to 75 runners while maintaining a high-quality, community-focused experience.
  • Unique Features:
    • Aid stations every 5 km.
    • Stunning Atlantic views and challenging terrain.
    • Emphasis on runner experience and camaraderie.
    • Working toward IAU certification.
